Boat Renter Operating Instructions
This page provides step-by-step instructions for safely picking up, towing, launching, operating, retrieving, and returning the rental boat. Renters must read, understand, and acknowledge these instructions before using the boat.
1. Pickup From Storage
- Arrive at the storage location at the scheduled time.
- Verify that your vehicle has:
- A 2-inch ball hitch
- A round trailer light connector
- Inspect the boat and trailer for any visible issues before leaving.
- Confirm that the boat is properly secured to the trailer:
- Winch strap tight
- Safety chain attached
- Transom straps secured
- Check that trailer lights (brake, turn, running lights) are functioning.
2. Towing the Boat to the Lake
- Drive cautiously and allow extra braking distance.
- Keep speeds moderate; trailers handle differently than normal driving.
- Avoid sudden lane changes or sharp turns.
- Periodically check mirrors to ensure the trailer is tracking properly.
- If you must stop, re-check:
- Hitch connection
- Safety chains
- Lights
- Tire condition
Critical towing reminders:
- Never exceed your vehicle’s towing capacity.
- Ensure weight is balanced and the boat is centered on the trailer.
- If trailer sway occurs, slow down gradually – do not accelerate.
3. Preparing to Launch
- Use the designated boat launch area only.
- Before backing down the ramp:
- Remove transom straps.
- Load all gear into the boat.
- Insert the drain plug.
- Disconnect the trailer lights if required by the lake.
- Back down the ramp slowly with a spotter if possible.
4. Launching the Boat
- Back the trailer into the water until the boat begins to float.
- Put the vehicle in park and set the parking brake.
- Unhook the winch strap only when the boat is supported by water.
- Gently push the boat off the trailer or use the motor to ease off.
- Move the boat to the courtesy dock and secure it with ropes.

5. Operating the Boat on the Water
- Follow all posted lake rules and speed limits.
- Do not overload the boat weight capacity.
- Maintain a safe distance from swimmers, docks, and other boats.
- Keep passengers seated while the boat is moving.
- Never operate the boat under unsafe conditions.
- Monitor fuel level throughout the day.
- Avoid shallow areas to prevent propeller or hull damage.
Critical boating reminders:
- Life jackets must be accessible for all passengers.
- Operator must remain sober and alert.
- Be aware of wake zones and no-wake areas.
6. Returning to the Ramp
- Approach the dock slowly and carefully.
- Secure the boat with ropes before retrieving the trailer.
- Back the trailer into the water until properly submerged.
- Drive or guide the boat onto the trailer, keeping it centered.
- Attach the winch strap and tighten fully.
- Raise the motor before pulling the trailer out of the water. (boats without sterndrive)
7. Pulling the Boat Out of the Water
- With the motor raised all the way up. (sterndrive boats)
- Pull the trailer up the ramp slowly.
- Move to the designated tie-down area.
- Reinstall transom straps.
- Remove the drain plug.
- Check that the motor is fully raised.
- Ensure all gear is removed from the boat.
8. Towing the Boat Back to Storage
- Follow the same towing safety rules as earlier.
- Drive cautiously and avoid sudden maneuvers.
- Ensure the boat remains centered and secured.
9. Parking the Boat at Storage
- Park the boat in the designated return area.
- Ensure the trailer is straight and properly positioned.
- Disconnect the trailer from your vehicle.
- Return keys and confirm completion of the rental.
